Thoughts about Self-Creation

“People always say you should be yourself, like yourself is this definite thing, like a toaster or something. Like you can know what it is, even. But every so often, I’ll have like, a moment, where being myself and my life right where I am is, like, enough.” Angela Chase (no relation) Character on My So Called Life.

This is, like, one of my favorite quotes of all time. It hits at the core of self creation to me. That we aren’t fixed things. We are always growing and learning and changing whether we want to or not. Whether we are aware of it or not. Whether we acknowledge it or not. Sometimes the changes are so small they are almost unnoticeable to anyone but they build up over time. Sometimes the changes are triggered by earth shattering events that can be either private or public. We are in the midst of an earth shattering public event and there is no doubt we will all be changed in some way.

So, given that change is inevitable we can be changed by forces acting on us and relinquish what control we have or we can be intentional.

This is the perfect time, when so many of us have been forced to step out of our routines that we have often gone about unthinkingly and examine their meaning to us. This is the time where we can pause to examine our values and decide if we have been living in them or if we have been following the values we are told to value. This is the time to choose what we are, at least in part.

And it is the perfect time to sit with the thought Angela shares that sometimes, we can accept that who we are and where we are, our life right now, is, like,  enough.
